The Great Carmo Cutting

We have been trading in Camden Town, London since 1868. Ownership remains in the same family to this day and the fourth generation sons now run the business. Although the family and nature of business has remained the same, the business name has changed over the years. What started as Chas Morgan became C Morgan & Sons and is now Chasmors Ltd.

Deliveries 100 years ago were made by horse drawn cart or by hand cart. In those days, in addition to weights and measures, wrought iron work was an important part of the business. It is because of this that Sydney Morgan took on the challenge from The Great Carmo detailed on the Bedford Theatre handbill from 1913. Needless to say Carmo did manage to escape, but we would like to think that it was not due to any shortcomings in our chains and padlocks.

Weighing scales remained mechanical until late in the 20th century, but the change to electronics is now almost complete. As in many industries, electronics has resulted in improvements in almost every area of weighing and measuring. Generally scales are cheaper, lighter and have a vastly improved specification.

There is always a role for the specialist firm and Chasmors Ltd shall continue to test and evaluate products and give unbiased advice.
